Making Homemade Butter

One of the things we have done in our school so far this year is make homemade butter. I was shockingly surprised how easy it really was to do. Of course my arms are tired. All you need to make your very own homemade butter is a wide mouth jar with a tight fitting lid, heavy whipping cream, salt (if you like) and a colander.

You fill the jar half way with the heavy whipping cream. Put the lid on tight and then holding the lid and bottom of the jar shake vigorously for 15 to 20 minutes. It helps if you have multiple people helping with this.

Next you drain off the buttermilk and rinse the butter under cold water until the water runs clear. At this point you can put the butter into molds or in a bowl and store in the fridge. You can also save the buttermilk for use in cooking or if you like to drink it. S loved the taste of the buttermilk. You can add salt to your butter for taste if you like.
